DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Columbia, South Carolina is located just a few miles from the renowned Riverbanks Zoo and Garden. Home to more than 2,000 animals, this zoo offers plenty of opportunities for learning, discovery, and fun. Wander through the Aquarium Reptile Complex, which is a unique blend of a traditional reptile house and an aquarium. Or meet the adorable koalas – gifts from South Carolina’s sister state Queensland, Australia. Riverbanks Zoo and Garden is 170 acres, and offers up close and personal experiences that you will always remember.
Sign up for an Adventure Tour and get a glimpse of what goes on behind the scenes at the zoo. See the world from the zookeeper’s point of view as you watch the care and effort that go into keeping a world class zoo running. A variety of tours are offered, from the big cat tour where you’ll meet the cats face to face, to the grizzly bear tour featuring a bear training session.
If you’re looking for thrills, check out the zip line canopy tour through the treetops. Travel up to 36 miles per hour on one of two zip courses. The Zoo Zip is a series of zips between trees along the edge of Carousel Plaza – this is a great course for beginning zippers. For an adrenaline rush try the River Zip, which includes several treetop zips, a rickety bridge, and a thrilling 1000-foot flight over the scenic Saluda River.
The Riverbanks Zoo and Garden offers several exciting events a year. For Halloween they put on Boo at the Zoo, which features trick or treating, a costume parade, and magic shows. November 22 to December 30 you can see Lights Before Christmas – watch one million lights glisten around the zoo, moving to coordinated music. Kids can visit Santa, and then warm up by the bonfire with some hot cocoa.
The zoo offers lively events for adults, as well. At the Spring Wine Tasting you can savor wines, eat a light bite, groove to some live jazz, and talk the wine experts and vintners. If beer is your beverage of choice, check out Brew at the Zoo and sample a variety of imports, domestics, and micros, listen to live music, and catch special presentations.
Springtime at the Garden Festival is fun for all ages. Learn about gardening and get inspired! More than 40 vendors offer products from plants and tools, to jewelry and garden art. Talk to plant experts and enjoy live music while the kids participate in hands on activities.
